shenanigans, we have a video of a romney volunteer down there saying that president obama is a muslim. it was picked up by an answering machine after the volunteer didn't hang up before moving on to her next call. the clip aired in tampa on a radio station, wmmf. nbc news hasn't independently authenticated the audio. >> you don't want obama. you really don't want obama because he'll get rid of your medicare. you might as well say good-bye to it. yeah, and, i don't know if you've done any research on obama or not, but eggs a muslim. >> well, he is a muslim. that's push polling. you pretend to be polling and all you're doing is putting out the word the guy is a communist. >> would you vote for someone who believes in communist. we're taking a survey. we've been talking about this for a couple years. for some reason the republican party and their conservative allies can't get away from describing obama as muslim, not born here, not believing in america. >> i know, i know, i know this is what they do. the head of florida's gop where the call appears to originate told "the st. augustine re

anybody in the romney campaign think they're only down by a point or two in ohio? no. they know ohio is falling into troubled territory. >> and they're pretty far behind in new hampshire. they're fighting a dogfight right now in north carolina. >> yeah. >> it's october 1st. that was a state that among the swing states, that was a state that was supposed to be the relatively easy gift for romney. there's a one or two-point race in north carolina on october 1st. they're facing an uphill slide across the board and they know it. >> by the way, you can't run 30-second ads in enough places to do this. if you're going to win, if you're going to turn things around, i'll say the quote that drives liberals crazy, a rising tide lifts all boats, this first debate on wednesday, it's got to shock the campaign back to life. because if romney does well, you're not going to be able to buy enough ads to do what a great performance by mitt romney would do on wednesday night. that would tighten it in ohio. it would tighten it in north carolina. probably go ahead in north carolina. it would tie it in iow

americans are looking at the romney ryan ticket as one that will address issues and will deliver a plan that has impact on middle class americans, that will bring down taxes for all americans. period. there's only one candidate that's actually talking about raising taxes and there's another candidate, the romney ryan ticket, that will cut taxes for all americans. so i think as we go into this, we'll hear a lot more of that. obviously at the debate and this is the next phase f that campaign. >> mitt romney leads according to our poll, on unemployment and the deficit. let me ask you this, ben, because one thing our viewers may assume is that democratic base is now energized and the convention is now partly responsible for that. rece recently, jim -- our new poll, how do you feel strength of support, 72% of voters are strongly excited. that's a virtual tie and extremely or very enthusiastic about voting in november, 65% of republicans. 64% of democrats. does that worry you? in '08, part of the reason the president won was his people were way more enthusiastic than john mccain's. >> we hear

't have to look it, is he it. he is it. mitt romney is a good debater, the president is a good debater. there will be no knockout punch but they'll have to be solid in order to move the ball down the field. >> we saw a clip in the previous segment from fox over the weekend with ryan and the big issue was the details on the tax plan. how much more in terms of details do you expect we'll learn from romney and by the way, are we going to learn any more details in terms of what president obama's planning to do? i'll go to you, morris, with that first in. >> we don't have any details on what the challenger is going to do. governor romney said he'll create 12 million jobs and the president has laid out a vision, put a marker in the ground and does have a track record to run on if you look at what he's been able to do in four years in moving us from the worst economy, almost a depression to where we are now in a recovery moving in the right direction. the devil will be in the details and the governor just can't sit there and say i'll create 12 million new jobs, trust me. >> terry, do you come
